The inherit problem in America is and has been racism and no one can deny that. It all started in those colonies and when Columbus stumbled upon what is now Haiti, and decided to seize it and subjugate the Taino inhabitants, that started a chain of events that was disastrous for non-Europeans in the Americas.

Columbus began extracting resources from Haiti in what amounts to an early version of ecocide and then he began whipping Taino people for minor offense which led to ears being cut off, noses being cut off and hands being cut off for what amounted to minor offense. Columbus seized total control over the island and the Taino people and word got out to other Europeans and they followed suit in search of riches and resources.

Columbus was a murderous, enslaving, sexual-abusing, treacherous colonizer to the peoples he encountered in the Caribbean but he's revered today as the guy who "Discovered America" and most people do not the true story.

Columbus left behind 39 colonizers in the first European settlement in the Americas, which he called La Navidad, in present-day Haiti.

When he returned from Spain several months later, he found that all the Europeans were dead. That didnt stop him; Columbus practice of settling on other peoples lands in the Americas sparked the European imagination, and those lands would soon be the backbones of empires.

What followed was centuries of oppression to the human beings who lived there, and to the land they lived on. Spain cleared land for massive tobacco plantations, beginning a long process of deforestation and soil erosion.

After France came into possession of Haiti, it cleared even more land, and brought in enslaved Africans to cultivate sugar to satisfy European palates.

The first place Europe settled in the Americas also became the first place that successfully revolted against it but the destructive practice of monocropping for overseas consumption had already taken hold.

The wealth from resources like sugar, tobacco, and cotton ushered in the start of the Industrial Revolution, which began emitting carbon at an unprecedented record level.

(((((((((((( Haiti (and many other non-European countries today) remain among the poorest countries in the Americas and the world; the European Union region remains one of the wealthiest in the world. This isnt because of some innate curse on Haiti. Its because its peoples, their labor, their lands, and their resources have long been embezzled without reparation. ))))))))))

So there's a very ugly history involved in colonizing and stealing land for resources that people want to shove under a rug and forget.
