While harassment and death threats aren't cool, the fact that fans have a direct line to devs and publishers has often had positive elements. Granted, sensible criticism is often overlooked in favor of the loudest, angriest voices, but the same was true when it came to letters that gaming magazines chose to publish. And, in terms of impact, it's still vastly less problematic than cancel culture (which also relies on social media) since the worst parts of the anger are disregarded which limits their effect.
