It's like the whole George Washington cutting down the cherry tree thing - it was never entirely meant to fool people who knew better, but the made-up story was more interesting than the truth so the truth was effectively erased and the only thing people remember any more is the lie. This is why we need better education in schools. Preferably a class that does nothing but debunk stupid stories like spinach being a super-food (a story based on a single typo and perpetuated for nearly 100 years, and the reason why it basically gives Popeye superpowers) or the horseshit about how humans only use 10% of their brains.
