One time my grandfather was telling me a story about when he was a child during the days of segregation. He and his group of white friends would often fight/insult/engage in drama with these group of black kids. He and his group would call them the N-word, while the black group of friends would call him and his group "cracker".

Another part of the story that he told me was that when he was in the war in Vietnam, he and one the members of the black group that he encountered during his childhood(one that he despised for a particular reason) were riding in a military vehicle(either a truck or jeep of some sort). I don't remember what particularly happened, but the base that he was currently stationed at was under attack by the Northern Vietnamese, and an explosion occured near the vehicle that he was riding. I don't quite remember what he said what happened during that time, but that black man from his childhood covered his body with himself and saved his life at the cost of his.
