This game is definitely an exception. It's essentially a fully realized sequel to Zelda II, except you don't start the game miserable at combat. Knowing where to go is a pain and the ending left a lot to be desired (I think I killed the final boss by accident) but it's a really, really solid action/adventure game overall.
