People were saying this when the 3DS launched, and it still managed to have a successful lifetime once it got past its rocky launch window (which was mostly due to a weak launch lineup and poor marketing that failed to differentiate it from the DS). Nintendo moved away from having a dedicated handheld not because there's no market for one, but because they felt they'd be better off not splitting their resources between two systems per generation and the Switch can still fill that niche to a certain extent.

That just means less games, and Nintendo never had just one console ever since the NES, so I don't think they really know how to actually allocate resources from two consoles to just one.
