It's the hardest thing to actually understand from the point of someone who doesn't interact with it full time. If all you can see are the readouts from a switch but can't figure it out on the endpoints, you could be looking at a media issue and that is hard to see. Yeah, I would say that I have a number of layer 1 knowledge gaps because I learned networking by reading Cisco books for certification exams...
