A bunch of vague ominous phrases introduce our "Zodiac Brave Story", whatever that means. Hey, O is confirm! It really is a PS1 FF game. I see the word 'Tutorial'... right after I click on New Game. Oops!

A scholar gives us a brief introduction to the Lion War, young hero Delita, and our protagonist Ramza. The intro cutscene is kinda cool, guessing this was made between 7 and 8. The cutscene leads us to Orbonne Monastery, where we get introduced to a whole bunch of weirdly named characters and also a priest named Simon. Ramza notes that he is no longer a knight, just a merc, and we're soon into the tutorial battle.

First thoughts:
-The presentation is just overall cool. Love the vibe.
-Walking in place is amusing.
-There is more to this than I expected- height of terrain is constantly noted for some reason, and you choose the direction you face after combat.
-No direct counterattacks in battle, at least not now. This is helpful to know.
-It's nice that you can attack and then move in the same turn.
-Despite Gafgarion being the one to insist we kill everyone, he spends most of his time casting Cure and it is Agrias who does the attacking.

As we only have to control Ramza it seems impossible to lose this, but Princess Ovelia is kidnapped anyway by... Delita! Gasp! (I'm glad this isn't a big spoiler I knew beforehand then).

Don't blame us. Blame yourself or God.

Flashback a year earlier to Magic City Gariland and we get a bit of background on the current situation (with the text slowing down ridiculously for the words 'little money')- abandoned soldiers with no money or jobs have no loyalty to the crown. Fair enough tbh. Ramza and his pal Delita are here. "We will begin exterminating these traitors. By order of our Master". Yeah that sounds like good guy talk. Onto a fight against some thieves, where we actually get to play a bit more. No control over Delita but he doesn't seem to need our help (And Ramza insists we don't need his!).

Surrender or die in obscurity!

Man this translation is good, typos aside why did they change this? We get through the battle without casualties, I chose the two Chemists on team and three Squires. We do use a couple potions, Hamilton and Rush were in tight spots at one point. I love that one of the moves is literally just throwing stones. Cool that the enemies can level up too. After winning we're off to the world map and I finally get to go through the many... many tutorials. God, I'm not gonna remember all this. Zodiac compatibilities and monster raising on top of everything else? Hopefully it'll come to me just by playing the game. Lmao at someone leaving the party if their Faith gets too high. We do know Ramza is godless heathen thanks to the intro.

Ramza dreams of his dying father, we get a big chunk of lore about the 50 year war at the bar, and apparently female soldiers cost less than male ones to buy. We rescue Algus after another quick battle (I hope there's a bunch of quick ones til I get used to the way things work), and Ramza prioritised saving his life (though he really didn't seem to need much help).

At Igros Castle we get a bit more of a sense of everybody's personalities and Zalbag basically tells us to go east to get info about the kidnapped Marquis and the Death Corps (who seem pretty cool to me at this point tbh). I'm leaving it here for now, I spent like an hour on the tutorials alone. Having fun, just a bit overwhelmed by all the names and text dumps and awful lot of gameplay info to remember. Will try to take it one bit at a time.
