Did you watch the Ju-on: The Curse or Ju-on: The Grudge?
Yes, Ju-On is The Grudge.

And I watched Ju-On: The Grudge. The theatrical version that came out in 2002.

DAY 25.3: Prom Night (1980)
On Peacock

So I remember watching the remake which I thought was incredibly uninspired. Fortunately, I can see why people consider this a cult classic.

Prom Night is about a group of high school kids who accidentally cause the death of one of their friends as children. It comes back against them when someone who witnessed this is out to kill everyone involved, on prom night!

So it's immediately obvious why this movie was so much more successful than the remake. It's fun. It's not great. It's just fun. The remake is just a depressing dramatic mess that probably failed to relate to prom goers.

What makes this movie fun is that they have disco hits from that time and even big sequences of people having fun at prom, along with the drama in the background to keep the plot going. But if you were in high school at the time this movie came out, I can see why you wanted to watch it. "Woah! Fun prom movie! AND THERE'S A KILLER!?" And there's a ton of dumb stuff involved that ends up just making it an enjoyable ride.

It's just not necessarily super interesting. I'm an adult though and I don't care about prom, but I can see with complete understanding why it caught on with so many people. If you're interested in watching an early 80's prom movie, then go ahead and watch this. Otherwise, it's a purely skippable slasher movie.
