DAY 26.1: Lovecraft Country (TV Series)
On HBO Max

This series is so hard for me to rate. This is Black-centric TV show with a majority black cast and I really enjoyed it.

Lovecraft Country is a show set in the 1950's that follows a man who returned from the military in a batshit crazy world of monsters and magic and madness.

So here's what I really love about this series. The effects and CGI are amazing. I haven't been as impressed by the special effects and CGI quality of a TV series since Legion. But you can tell they threw a lot of money into this show.

The scares are really, really well done. Just the outright insanity and range of insane monsters to disgusting magic BS to... Well, a lot of other things. They do a great job being terrifying when they want to be.

The series feels almost like an anthology show, but it progresses the plot each and every episode. It's extremely impressive how they do this and, more or less give focus to each character. But one episode you have a monster show, the next is a haunted house, the next is jumping through time, the next is grotesque body horror, and then an episode set in Asia with Asian horror elements. It keeps each episode completely fresh and exciting while still giving you progression to the overall plot. It's so damn good in that aspect.

The acting is also outstanding and, for the most part, the plot is really, really strong and fun to watch.

Where I think it suffers is that I think the protagonist kinda sucks. I don't like him and I don't know how we're really supposed to like him. It really weakens the show a lot, honestly.

I think sometimes the script gets a little hokey. That isn't to say it's bad, but it feels very hokey sometimes and I just have to give it a weird look like... You really went with this dialogue?

And while I like the anthology format, I also feel some episodes (even ones I like a lot!) introduce stuff and then... It's kind of nothing after that. You also get kind of whiplash from the plot sometimes in terms of how different everything is.

Overall, this show is absolutely well-done and I recommend it for anyone looking for a fun horror show. It does everything you need with a unique flavor of a mostly black cast. There's some really impressive stuff in this show.

Rating: 8.5/10
