I thought Baghuul was perfectly fine as the demon weirdo who doesn't really have to do much!

DAY 27.2: Friday the 13th (1980)
On AMC

So okay, Friday the 13th is a series that I really never loved, but I enjoyed well enough I guess? They all sort of blend together for me....... except for this one. And I will end up spoiling this one, so if you don't know the major difference between the first movie in the series and the rest, go ahead and stop reading.

Camp Crystal Lake has MURDER happen after a young boy drowns 21 years prior. But then they try to re-open the camp and then all the counselors start to get murdered.

It's been forever since I watched the original movie. It's kind of boring through the first part... and honestly pretty unremarkable until you get to the end. Last chance for spoilers!

Jason's Mom is the killer in this one, and she's completely unhinged and performs her role perfectly. She's a delight to watch, honestly, being a psycho with a large knife. She's the best part of this movie by far.

That said, I kinda hate how this is all set up. We do POV shots and cut away each time anything is going to happen until we see the victims' corpses all flopping about to scare the final girl. It's just not a great way to do it, but when you get to the killer reveal, you get why. If it weren't for the reveal, this movie would suck. Full stop. But it improves so much after that. I wish they gave us a little bit more before that.

It's a clever movie in that it tricks you into thinking it's Jason for the whole movie. It's a great little campfire story redirection. It's just that the movie isn't great until we get towards the end. But I kind of really appreciate it once it gets there?

But the music in this movie is a hell of a lot better than I remember. It's all so iconic with striking string instruments at perfect times. It does make it all feel a lot better and stand out.

I would say it's worth watching from Jason's Mom onward, just to see how the original ended up playing out. It's just so different from the maniac machete-wielding Jason Vorheese we're all used to, because the most action you get in this movie is an older woman with a knife. And that's kind of funny in retrospect. I score it as high as I do entirely because of the storytelling and the back end of the movie.

Rating: 6.5/10

Debating whether or not to watch the remake or the second film after this in the next few days. I'm thinking the second movie because I want to be reminded of just how different it is from the first film. And also because the remake is kinda bad.
