Dude likely had baseline psych problems but seeing racism in the LAPD and the fact that he got screwed by it is what drove him over the edge. It was somewhat like a negotiator situation except the cops won. Even his hostages were unharmed and sympathized with him when the cops burned the cabin down knowing it could kill civilians....
