why is it a devil vine?

Covered with thorns and I fell into one when I was little. I was maybe 7. Our house had railroad tracks behind it and there was a massive blackberry bramble growing along nearly the entire fencline of the houses that bordered the tracks. I imagine it had been planted to discourage people who were wandering along the tracks from trying to steal stuff from the backyards along it.

I would regularly climb up on the fence and pick blackberries when they were in season. One day I must have leaned too far out and I lost my balance, falling head first into the large, old, tangled blackberry bush. Inside it the vines were much thicker with large thorns. I couldn't climb out because the fence was too high and I couldn't walk out because the bush was too big and tangled and stabby. My father had to come rescue me.
