Okay, now I really believe time is a flat circle. The best part of the debt ceiling news cycle has returned.

Getting rid of the debt ceiling in its entirety is what should be done given that Congress authorized all the spending in the first place (i.e. it's not that the hypothetical infrastructure bills would bring us over or anything it's the already existing and passed spending that is) but #MintTheCoin is my "favorite" solution other than that for how silly the loophole is... only that would absolve Congress of its responsibility here and I would hate that.

ok. good move by trump, though i'm not exactly sure why four years was apparently not long enough to get the troops out of there.
Because he didn't really care and it was more of a last minute 2020 campaign stunt. Like, the actual negotitations didn't even include the Afghan government IIRC. It was solely between the Trump Administration and the Taliban and they ended up releasing a bunch of Taliban prisoners, including - as mentioned - the guy now in charge over there.

Honestly the fact that it was scheduled for May 2021 originally - and thus his hypothetical second term - raises questions for me too. It probably would have been a bigger shitshow under his watch than it was under Biden's because he would give absolutely zero shits about anyone's safety over there... but if not for his narcissism and inability to even acknowledge a reality in which he lost I'd wonder if the timnig was intentional to drop a shitshow on Biden in the event that he did lose.

IIRC he threw a tantrum after he lost and ordered the military to basically withdraw from everywhere (including Germany, etc.) immediately in January but they basically ignored the order (which, in a vacuum is concerning, but probably the right call in this specific situation)
