The reason you typically can't discharge student loan debt via bankruptcy is that you can't have the benefit of having gone to college taken away from you. It creates a perverse incentive if you can just get a college education for free by abusing bankruptcy.

That said, I don't see any details in the article about the college he went to/the degree he got. Iirc the Obama Department of Education forgave loans for students who went to for-profit colleges with worthless degree programs (basically concluding that the students were victims of fraud). If that's what this is I'm quite sympathetic to the guy and am fine with the debt being discharged. But if he went to a real college and got an actual education that generally was beneficial to other students I don't think he should be getting bailed out here.

Did you read the article? He has epilepsy and the bankruptcy court is satisfied that he is never going to be able to work a regular job. He cannot use his degree.
