If the lender is the US government I think there are much better ways to spend that money. If private loans could be discharged by bankruptcy, on the other hand, it would become much harder for students to get them which would prevent other people from being able to go to college at all.

I take it you haven't taken out a student loan in the last 12+ years? Nowadays basically no one gets private student loans because the federal government qualifies basically anyone for as much in loans as they want.
