Sequels are nothing new, but modern gaming almost exclusively focuses on them. It's so hard for a new series to break through.
I'd have to disagree. New IPs this generation include Assassin's Creed, Uncharted, Portal, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Gears of War, Rock Band, and Saints Row just to name a few. Even Call of Duty, while it did exist prior to this generation, didn't become the juggernaut that it is until Modern Warfare (sort of like how GTA existed prior to the PS2 era but was a much different entity prior to GTA3).
