We talked about this a couple years ago during a LOST ranking topic... it's less sexism on the part of the consumer than it is the male-dominated writing industry not knowing how to write female characters.
I think there's also an undercurrent societal sexism to it, too - if women show their emotions, they're called "weak." We know that's not true - weak people let their emotions control them, but you can be both strong and emotional. We have seen these ridiculous hypocrisies on Survivor on the regular. People are more judgy of women than they are of men.

What fuels this is probably all those male writers in Disneywood displaying what's supposed to make a woman "strong" vs. "weak" and that leads people to believe those as reality. All it does is perpetuate sexist stereotypes. And that's not fair.
