Maybe; the government should not have given it to begin with, and the government would have certainly kept the interest for other projects rather then pass it down to a family in need, and it's doubtful the money will go anywhere other than the kitty to investigate and prosecute those involved in the misappropriation of funds.

Good on Brett for giving the principal back, but he may need some introspection if he thinks that by accepting large amounts of cash he is somehow helping the under privileged.

He gave it back because he didn't do what he was paid to do. There should be no interest on it at all because there wouldn't have been any interest in the first place.
