#88: Good Times With Weapons

Show: South Park
Original airdate: March 17, 2004

"Hey hey, let's go, kenka suru!
Taisetsu na mono, protect my balls!"

An uproariously funny South Park classic, Good Times With Weapons lampoons anime heavily as the boys purchase weapons from the county fair and battle it out as if they were real anime superheroes, set to a hilarious nonsense Engrish song. The episode came out at pretty much the peak of my anime obsession, so I could definitely appreciate all the tropes that were parodied as the animation shifted back and forth from epic anime styling to the typical South Park look, and it was quite hilarious to see the shift from a ferocious clash with special effects and realistic weapons to the two groups of boys just playing pretend with their very real weapons... of course, it's all fun and games until someone loses an eye, and that's exactly what happened to poor Butters, who tried to put on his Professor Chaos costume and join the fray. Even more dark comedy ensues as the boys try to keep from getting in trouble, culminating in a final scene in which the show makes its opinion known on the then-recent Janet Jackson Super Bowl scandal. SPOILERS: The parents are much more offended by Cartman running around naked than they are by Butters nearly dying... which is to be expected from a show as utterly ludicrous as South Park. From this episode's skewering of anime tropes (while also paying homage to Trey Parker's favorites) to its brilliantly communicated message, to the catchy, gut-bustingly funny "Let's Fighting Love", this episode truly had it all, and takes a deserved place among the fandom's favorite episodes and mine as well.
