37. Demon of the Poster

Only five rankings later and we already have another Demon! Now I don't believe anyone's ranked him yet for SOME reason, so I'll give a brief overview of the guy.

So our gang of misfits and whatnot are exploring the streets of Baltimore, and we end up in The Poe House, the real world museum and once home of writer Edgar Allen Poe. Now, the house is occupied by a man named Merritt. I'm gonna throw in a quick HM to Merritt himself

HM: Merritt

because despite only being an extremely short-lived character, Merritt immediately left a strong impression. The man speaks entirely in poems and rhyme, themed much after Poe himself. His poetic speech patterns hide a dark story though, as he's done terrible things in exchange for immortality in service of a demon.

Who is this demon? We still don't really know!

Inside The Poe House is a poster, and before we realize it we're inside a massive hellscape inhabited by one being. The Demon of the Poster. He won't tell us his name, and despite multiple prodding by Bloodfruit since then, he still hasn't given it up. As we all know, names have power.

He claims to be a ruler of Hell trapped within the realm of the poster, and cannot return home unless we manage to destroy the poster from within Hell, in exchange for untold reward. In a time where all worlds are under duress, we need any help we can get, and Bloodfruit ultimately christens our deal as an official Fae deal. When we return to the human realm, Merritt's deal for immortality is broken and he dies immediately. RIP our boy.

The Demon himself is an enigma. Can we trust him? Absolutely fucking not. He's literally a demon, and never even claims to be a friendly one. Again, we still don't have his name. But in that lack of trust is an exciting dynamic. He needs us more than we need him. We are his only hope, and in that hope is power. Power that Bloodfruit immediately took advantage of to make mock him to his face.

Was that a good idea? Absolutely fucking not, but she will always continue to push limits. And between meeting Blue Devil and seeing Torcher,

a demon slowly dying in our sickbay, Bloodfruit can't help but wonder if a true ally can be made of the Demon. Probably not. But maybe.

Hint for #36: This is another character that hasn't been seen in the last at least 100+ sessions.
