"Tell the President I'm sorry, I can't do this anymore."

Jack Bauer quit for just five minutes, and a nuclear bomb went off. This episode, the conclusion of the four hour, two night season 6 premiere event, featured pretty much the biggest and most successful terrorist attack ever depicted on 24, and was probably the climax of my fandom of the show. It was the culmination of an already shocking series of events, in which Jack was assigned to protect a former terrorist with information about a dangerous new plot, only to be forced to shoot his old partner Curtis when he tried to kill him out of revenge. When I saw that nuke go off, my jaw was on the floor. I was stunned, and I immediately ran to tell my mom "holy shit did you know they set off a nuke on 24 holy shit!" Yeah... it was absolutely one of the biggest "holy shit" moments in the history of television for me, and I was hyped as hell for the rest of the season. Of course, everyone knows how the rest of season 6 went: it was a confusing and disappointing mess that brought in Jack's family for some reason, absolutely squandered the "Bluetooth Mafia" storyline by having the leader end up being Jack's wimpy brother, then squandered a potentially excellent character in the former terrorist leader Assad by having him get randomly killed in an attack on Wayne Palmer... so yeah, as awesome as this episode was, it also represents the high water mark of the show. Seasons 7 and 8 were excellent and redeemed season 6's failure, but it's a shame that this moment really was as good as it got for season 6.
