looking at a google image search, axiom verge 2 seems better-looking than castlevania 1 and metroid 1. like at the very least there's "more" going on visually. i think it's fair to argue that it's not visually distinctive, but the textures in the art can be more pleasing to the people who are able to distinguish what's going on

discussing that specific quality, and whether that's a trend in modern games, is also just way more productive than whether or not "objectively ugly/bad" exists

Oh it certainly doesnt look worse than every NES game, but look at images of the original ninja turtles. It looks miles better.

The bar should not be looking better than some but not all NES games.
