I haven't played, so I can't say what that would be.
I think it's pretty clear:
Every time there were visions of the future and they talked about changing it the visions were Aerith dying and Meteor hitting Midgar.Everybody else who is supposed to be dead is alive or...possibly aliveHaving a giant metal plate fall on Sector 7 is something that the slums can apparently 'rebuild' from now. Not sure where the plate went. No point in showing that unless Midgar is going to make it in the long run, right?It seems to me keeping Aerith alive and then having a super happy ending is why they decided to make changes in the first place.
I say they're going to pull an Act 3 of Dragon Quest 11: a super happy 'remake' ending with all plot threads resolved happily whether it makes sense or not (or is good writing or not).
