Askaladd and his band would have done far less if they had been nearly obliterated by thors and thorfinn himself goes on to kill 100s all because of the situation. If thors had been in better form and willing to kill, he really might have taken askaladd down, which would have effectively avoided an entire war. And realistically it's very strange that thorfinn wasn't sold as a slave or killed right after that, given the lengths askaladd was willing to go to (plot armor effectively, no one else in the show after that was afforded such luck, even those that didn't fight back).

Of course, the issue with the pacifism is even more apparent if the situation is more reasonable. Imagine the archers hadn't been there. They all might have died just because thors wouldn't kill anyone. If you can't stop the violence from happening, then avoiding participation is just self satisfaction, you aren't actually contributing to making the world a better place. How are you gonna look at your dead family and think "oh wow, sure was a good thing I didn't protect them".
