Quake (Steam) and all its expansions

So, first time playing this and I know it's the darling of the OT3 boomer shooter trio (Wolf3D/Doom/Quake) but honestly my first impression was not super positive. My love for Wolf3D is definitely partly nostalgia but I finished Quake with the distinct impression that I liked Wolf3D more.

But... then I played the expansions.

Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity are just good as hell extra campaigns that add new weapons, new enemies, and some much more interesting maps. It ruins the game balance slightly because it gives you a rocket launcher that shoots like 5 rockets at once which 1-2 hits basically everything but that's fun! It's fun to just be able to kill stuff without it being a huge slog.

Then I played Dimension of the Past, which is probably the worst expansion. It's still good but it dials back all the additions from Armagon and Eternity, and it's extremely stingy with ammo so you really have to play conservatively.

Then I finished it off with Dimension of the Machine, which unfortunately still doesn't bring back the enemy/weapon variety but does keep things fresh by introducing a hub world with 5 mini-episodes you can tackle in any order. Each episode is two fairly lengthy missions long and they take place in really cool, unique locales and have some of the most hectic firefights in the series. Really good expansion to end things off with.

So overall I loved this game and you can tell because I basically marathoned all 20-some hours of it in less than a week lmao
