#326:

Four songs, featuring the requested fairly long song & the three "Shimamanaga Ena" tracks from post #316. (I'll circle back to UF8's first batch of songs soon-ish, hopefully).

Pain of Salvation - In the Passing Light of Day:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLYeJcuPj68

Estimated Score: 66.56

Ah, I've missed this band more than I thought I did. I really should relisten to "Be" sometime, though I'm sure of spoken of my fondness for that album enough for now. This is a pretty nice song. The sorrow of slowly dying is the type of sadness that tends to play rather well with me as of late & I think there's a fairly pleasing build to the song. The way it starts off very quiet and resigned as a tragedy, then picking up once we hit the middle of the song and adding in some fairly harsh sounds, before breaking back down to quiet sorrow as he's practically sobbing on the next to last verse... and the end is really quite powerful, with the way the song builds back up with a vaguely hopeful sound to it as he reassures his wife that it's okay for him to die, followed by the song fading out as his breathing slowly ends.

While it's not quite a favorite, I think the song admirably accomplishes its goals and hits the right amount of sadness while offering a different look at an artist that I have considerable nostalgia for, so I quite enjoyed that. It's also another of those songs where it doesn't really *feel* like it went on for 15 minutes. Nice song all around, thank you.

-I... have forgotten exactly which song of UF8's I left off on, so I'm going to skip ahead to the first song from the second batch because I feel slightly lazy-

Shimanaga Ena - Kagirohi. (composer: Namba Ken):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbTyVwWiMj8

Estimated Score: 59.5556

Not a bad track. The upbeat energy of the backing music is pleasant; it's... happy without being overly energetic? The lyrics are also fairly nice; the themes of bonds & promises & hopes for reunions aren't the most original, but they're also generally comforting as familiar subject matter. And there are some nice lines about the moon (yay, moon!) & searching for the meaning of existence, so there are a few good lines sprinkled throughout the song. I think it's a bit below the 60 point mark, but still rather close and a generally nicely relaxing song.

-mayhaps I'll just cover the three songs of hers that are listed in a row.-

Shimanaga Ena - Capella. (composer: Namba Ken):

Estimated Score: 55.39

A much more subdued song than the previous one. I'm not as drawn to it, as it feels like it's missing a hook without the "somewhat upbeat nature" that carried Kagirohi, but I'd say I kinda like it.

Shimanaga Ena - mellow. (composer: Namba Ken):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QP6yLRI9SQ

Estimated Score: 63.27

A lot of contributors to this song:

Rap:
Imaoka Maya

Chorus:
Kanaka Mana
Hinamizawa Kurumi
Hoshino Meguri
floss spica
Yotsutsuji Yukino
RIN-ne
Blank (Ame Kayaya & Ken Namba)

I really like the groove that opens the song. I think it loses a bit of what I was so attached to once the singing starts, but it's still has a fine feeling to it that befits the song's title. I don't care for the section after the first chorus, which I'm presuming is Imaoka Maya's portion section, I don't think that singer's voice really gels with the vibe of the rest of the song--but I'm likely being overly harsh and it's likely the type of section that would get a "I'm not as negative towards this part now that I'm prepared for it to happen" writeup.

And for as mean as that may have sounded, the score still puts it well above the 60 point Clump & it's easily the best of this set of three songs, so let's say I like the song (and still really like the intro) and move along.

Okay, that went reasonably well. Some internet trouble, but nothing too severe and things seem the same as usual. I feel like the internet here has never been this cooperative, but I'm going to take this as a good sign. More songs tomorrow, hopefully.
