Most think he snapped immediately after the Joker killed Lois but his decline was gradual over the course of 5 years. If freedom leads way to crime and monsters like the Joker running free then is it really worth it? Should the worse crinimals be put down or jailed for good? That's probably why the universe was added to thE comics and even explored from time to time. Like they are recently in the superman conic.
