We clearly see him swimming towards the buoy, there's something that makes waves near the buoy, then he all of a sudden does a 180 and starts desperately swimming the other way. If it was just a wave it wouldn't have scared him like that and if he was pulled under by the current we would have seen him still swimming towards the buoy, just unable to reach it. I'm like 80% sure it's a shark but if you're drunk and jump into the ocean at night, what are the odds you can see anything except blurry lights? I don't see much panic in his movements.
