As someone who has never really played Zelda games

WTF? Link is trans now?

No, not in any official statement from Nintendo or in game canon.
They are mad at a subculture of the fans.

I thought the origin point of Link was that Link was the child playing the game. Hence the name "Link"

Nope. That's just the name of "The Hero" in the various continuities. There's been some talk from character creator Shigeru Miyamoto that in the original legend of zelda there was going to be time travel, and later that became a theme in some games with "Link" being the hero that bridges the gaps between the ages.

Otherwise he is just "Link" because that's the name they gave him. Like Mario, Spyro, or Solid Snake... it's ultimately just their name. The main difference being that there are different links for each "world" or "age" the various games take place in.

And they only made him a male in later games.

No, although it is different Links in different eras or worlds, Link has always been a specific male character.
