I think I remember hearing that Link has gone through some different iterations but after masculine Twilight Princess Link, the creator said he wanted Link to be kind of androgynous so anyone could see themselves as Link. So in my eyes they kind of are a trans icon but that should be a positive thing. Link as a character is solid and it isn't really being forced in any way.
