As I said, that's why real subs carry cyanide pills for everyone on board: if they end up with a life support failure, it's really only humane to make sure everyone has an easier out than that. With more recent information, yeah, their deaths were probably near-instantaneous. Humans can't remain conscious through such rapid pressurization as that, even if they somehow managed not to be crushed by the walls of the sub as it collapsed.
