Boris is designed in such a way that it presents conflict between himself and Elmer and causes Elmer to grow as a person as well. People complain about the middle just being random fluff. The whole point of the middle is to show the two grow together and gives more meaning and impact behind their decisions later on in the film. Meh, whatever.
