Currently Playing: Whitewater Wipeout

So I picked this game first based on the very scientific method of it being first in my queue. The home menu of the Playdate is basically just a list of games you have, and this one was on top.

It is...uh...a very simple surfing game. You are a surfer and you have three attempts to get as many points as possible. You surf to the left and jump and you earn points with how high you jump and how many spins you do. So can chain combos together and each run ends when you wipeout.

It isn't bad, and it at least shows off the crank since that's the only thing you use to control things. You navigate with the crank, and when you jump you rotate the crank to turn your surfer and rack up those sweet, sweet points. It does have a bit of a tech demo-y feel to it. Like "oh hey look at this cool thing you can do with the Playdate" and you're like "uh huh ok that's fine - where are the actual games"? It has like Game & Watch vibes to it where you just have one little game with one little mechanic and your job is to get as good at that one mechanic as you can.

The game has online leaderboards, which is always cool. Gives me something to chase. That's a plus!

A minus is I've never been a huge fan of these arcade style point chasers. I played for roughly twenty minutes before spending the next twenty minutes checking the store to see what else I could be playing instead. I'll probably play this one a bit more tomorrow and try to top my score, then move on to greener pastures.

Beaten? Technically, I guess. You can't really beat it
Grade: Leaning towards a D+, C- kinda range. Not bad. Functional. Very minimalist and not in a style I usually like.
Favorite Part So Far: I hit a bird with my surfboard and the game said "BIRD UP" and I have absolutely no clue what that means but I was like "hell yeah, bird up, bitches."
