So I won't get it all back directly, but the long term financial impact will end up being less than 20k

Oh, hmm. That's not bad at all. I don't live in California, so I can't claim those rebates, but even 30k - 7.5 sounds not all that bad if I really were on the market for a new vehicle today.

And yeah, tax credits for making these moves are great. (For the consumer, at least.) They're bringing the cost of the solar install from a 25k estimate up front to more like 18.
