One thing that's so fantastic about a quality Springsteen album like this is that it feels like a Greatest Hits compilation - almost every song is a banger. This is true with this one, Born to Run, and Nebraska; each is a phenomenal listen. Like Nebraska, this one has this blue collar concept, but the themes tie the story together more tightly - the result is a cohesive album where the songs work as a unit as well as on their own, and the incorporated pop hooks made this a smashing success. He recorded a whopping 80 songs during this time, a list which includes other good stuff like "Pink Cadillac", "None but the Brave" and "County Fair" - all of which would've been welcome here, but he wanted to shoot for about 45 minutes for a reason. The album works largely because it doesn't overstay its welcome.

Quick aside: A cool story about Springsteen from around these parts was that, back in 2004, he was campaigning with John Kerry and performed on stage at a rally. Someone hung a "THE BOSS COULD USE A FREE BEER" sign from their porch across the street. He pointed it out to Kerry, who said "after." So after the rally, Springsteen went over to that house and talked to the two guys who lived there over beers for half an hour. Shows how cool the man is.

  1. I'm on Fire - Haunting and beautiful. An underrated gem in Springsteen's repertoire.
  2. Dancing in the Dark - One of the catchiest songs the man ever recorded. A true classic.
  3. Born in the U.S.A. - Really noticing the drum work and how much punch that brings here.
  4. Glory Days - The song passes you by, but it's glorious while it lasts. A radio staple for a reason.
  5. Cover Me - This dark 80s sound fits the urgency the Boss is feeling; it's pretty great
  6. Bobby Jean
  7. My Hometown
  8. I'm Goin' Down
  9. No Surrender
  10. Downbound Train
  11. Darlington County - While still good, this one doesn't do anything that the others don't do better.
  12. Working on the Highway - Forgettable just because of everything surrounding it. Really, the only song here that's not a banger, and it could've been left off for something else.
