The episode was basically a parody of beginning of season twists while itself also being one, then reversing things at the end like it never happened. South Park similarly had a two-parter about Cartman's real father, and the night of the second part ended up being a Terrence and Phillip episode instead, and people were pissed. It's basically like "we're fine with you doing parodies of everything else, but don't you DARE play these jokes on us, the fans!"
