FoolFantastic 09/22/23 3:12:56 PM #23: | Despite their gothic image, a lot of The Cure's best known songs are actually quite cheery. Disintegration feels like a momentary rejection of this, a work of raw emotion where every melancholic thought is drawn out to a breaking point. This is one of the best examples of music as an atmospheric force, though I would also argue that each song feels like a full journey in themselves. This is the perfect case of a band returning to their origins and applying everything they learned in the time since, the desperate atmosphere of "A Forest" paired with more accessible instrumentation.
