I argued with someone about this, and maybe the reason is because I stopped watching early on after a season or two... but it's clear from the start Dwight is so far out of his league in terms of competence and Jim realizes this early on and makes picking on and humiliating Dwight his hobby bordering on obsession. After a time, I started feeling sorry for Dwight despite being written to be unlikable and started hating Jim... and partly because Jim is not really likable outside of the bullying. Jim and Pam are just dull main characters for the most part.
