i dunno why but i always pictured PO as a tall silent bob.

..not so fat tho.

This isn't entirely inaccurate.

Might have been even more accurate in college, when I wore a trenchcoat most of the time. Though I never wore hats. Still don't. Always hated hats. And I wasn't a stoner. But I usually had a close trimmed beard or goatee 99% of the time (still do).

And I was never really fat like he was, or had anything close to his build. In high school I was borderline gangly, and by college I was pretty athletic (running track, playing soccer, hockey, and volleyball from time-to-time). I've put on weight since then, but I'm not morbidly obese, I've just sort of got old man dad bod. Which kind of makes sense, all things considered. My build was probably closer to Jay's most of the time.

I also used to get "Oh, your sense of humor is just like Kevin Smith's, tee hee!" a lot when I first started hanging out online. But I mostly attribute that to the fact that he's got a very basic sarcastic New Jersey style sense of humor, and he grew up about 25 miles south of me and about 6 years before me. So there's a lot of cultural overlap in how we both see the world (or at least there used to be).

Though whenever anyone ever said "Hey, what celebrity do you most look like?", I'd always say this:

...even though I look slightly younger than he does. Even though he was almost the exact age in that (49) that I am now (47). I've got less grey hair and fewer wrinkles, anyway.

Hope that doesn't mean I'm going to get my head cut off by a Scotsman in a couple years, that would suck.

Speaking of middle/high school: There was this guy I used to go to school with who was mostly quiet, until you talked to him about subjects that interested him, then he would go on these long winded, rambling rants. He was tall, glasses, always wore a Tool shirt (probably owned like 20 or 30 of him)

This isn't entirely far off from me in high school, either - though I was never into Tool. You'd be far more likely to see me wearing a Far Side shirt. Or something like one of these:

But most of the time I was just wearing plain black t-shirts or even black turtlenecks (depending on the weather), and usually had a jacket on over it. Which was either my varsity jacket, a black trenchcoat, or a black dress coat sort of like this one:

Still have all of those jackets, actually. I'm terrible at getting rid of old clothes (though I've been trying to purge a lot of stuff recently).

despite the fact that he was way smarter than anyone else in school, he pretty much spent all of his teens and 20's in college. In fact even though he was 2 or 3 years older than me, he was still in some of my college classes because he just wanted to take the same classes over and over again to prove how smart he was.

This was never me, though.

I mostly half-assed my way through school. I coasted through high school, and in college I skipped classes all the time and mostly just wanted to get the hell out as quickly as possible. I really only took the classes I needed for my major, and then did the bare minimum to pass unless it was a class that specifically appealed to me (like my core major classes or my comp sci minor classes).

I never really cared if people thought I was smart as opposed to actually being smart. When I get lecture-y about stuff, it's less because I'm trying to convey "Look how much I know about stuff!" as much as because I've got a tendency towards pedagoguery because I like trying to make everyone else smarter. No matter how often they try and fight against me. Grrr!

I said this years ago, and it still sort of holds true (though less so now, because I'm more tired and jaded now) - on some level I basically just want to kind of incept knowledge into people. And then, after I'm dead and gone, there'll be dozens of people wandering around in the world who know stuff solely because I'm the one who shoved those facts into their brain.

But mostly I just like knowing things. I like reading about history and science and culture and generally learning stuff I didn't know before. I just find it satisfying.
