Where else would he have learned about Jenova, considering everyone he knew who would know lied to him about it and all the files on the experiment only exist in the Shinra manor (maybe Gast or Hojo had more, but again they were lying to him)They clearly brief him on super confidential stuff all the time (e.g. Hojo's experiments), and he has limitless access to places like the manor's library.
