Tells the police he dressed up as Michael Myers and used a machete
Small correction. He wore a jumpsuit he'd used for a Michael Myers costume the previous Halloween, he didn't wear the mask. I think because it would be easier to clean than normal clothes, but I might be mixing up what he said with what I assumed.

And it wasn't a machete, it was a large kitchen knife. Which I was surprised a kitchen knife, even a big one, could mutilate a body that extensively.

As for the parents.

In retrospect all of these things are obvious red flags, but there are a ton of edgy teens who make morbid, fucked up jokes. How many people on this very board used to look up shock videos and the like? They took him to see counselors and got him on medication. The mom even set an alarm for herself every night to make sure she reminded him to take it. And I don't think they were privy to the full extent of things; I don't remember any mention of them knowing about the cat.

His fascination with serial killers isn't a red flag in and of itself. This very video has over five million views and the channel behind it as nearly as many subscribers. And of course we're sat here talking about it. Even my mom generally won't watch a TV show unless someone gets murdered in it. A shitload of people that aren't serial killers are fascinated with true crime and serial killers.

Even something more extreme like the killer's toolkit they found, how would you even deal with that situation? More counseling that isn't going to do anything because the dude is fundamentally broken? Call the police like they threatened to do? They aren't going to do anything just because someone's carrying around a box of murder tools.

And then there is just the simple denial. Like Bomberman said, parents don't want to believe their kid could do something this heinous. The dad in the video even mentions that, saying there are red flags he didn't ignore exactly but chose to believe his son about because he wanted to believe. And when it finally did come down to absolute proof, they immediately called the police and turned him in. Some parents wouldn't.

I imagine the parents could have done more at some point in the kid's life, but I don't see it as a failure of their parenting. It doesn't seem like they were abusive or anything, the kid is just fundamentally fucked up on a chemical level. They were humans doing their best with an inhuman situation.
