Ended up winning with Tifa/Cloud/Aerith rush down Yup this was my exact experience. It must be purely how aggressive you're being with your ATB attacks. I still haven't tried again though. I just got to chapter 12 and it dumped so many new sidequests and shit to do that I felt overwhelmed and called it a night.
