It's generally very difficult to find a doctor willing to do a tubal for any woman who doesn't already have kids and/or is under 40. Part of that is a fear of litigation if they change their mind later, part of it's a deep-seeded sexist belief that every woman wants kids and that anyone seeking sterilization just hasn't clued into that yet, part of it's an even more sexist belief that it's wrong for women not to have kids, it's common to expect that they involve a husband in the process to give them permission (I do think couples should discuss sterilization with each other before making any decisions, but the idea of requiring "permission" is obviously ridiculous)... It's a very different experience from a guy saying "I want a vasectomy."

That's not just an American thing, either. It's also true here in Canada, and I expect much of the rest of the world (even the parts that ostensibly recognize women's rights as being important).
