The Washington Post article actually goes pretty indepth here in analyzing the details of both Sheehy's Afghanistan story(s) and the park report and is worth a read if you want the details on various things.

They tracked down the park ranger in question and he told them he inspected the gun and there was a missing bullet, Sheehy's team provided WaPo with an X-Ray of his arm on the condition they not publish the actual X-Ray itself - but they showed it to doctors and one with extensive trauma experience said the object appeared to be a bullet but did not seem to be, in his opinion, consistent with a ricochet shot from a military grade weapon (as he claims in his Afghanistan stories.) He also has changed the details of his Afghanistan story from time to time - including on things as big as how many bullets he took.

About the only piece they report on that is in his favor is that they also talked to a firearms expert who, in addressing one of Sheehy's defenses that it was "impossible" for a Colt .45 to accidentally discharge like this - said it would be "very unlikely" for an accidental discharge to occur if the events of the incident in the citation are accurate. However, and this is me offering my thoughts now, it's worth noting (and the article states this elsewhere) that the incident details are based entirely off of Sheehy's account so it's entirely possible he didn't report it 100% accurately if it was more embarrassing to him in reality. But also even if he did tell the truth to the ranger - unlike Sheehy's team which said "impossible" the firearms expert said "very unlikely" which I mean... isn't zero
