Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook is partnering with Lionsgate Television to develop a series version of his 2003 revenge thriller Oldboy.

The project would be an English-language adaptation of the story, which was loosely based on a magna with the same name.

Lionsgate Television shares my creative vision for bringing Oldboy into the world of television, said Park. I look forward to working with a studio whose brand stands for bold, original and risk-taking storytelling.

In addition to directing The Handmaiden and Decision to Leave, Park previously produced the dystopian thriller Snowpiercer which was likewise adapted into a series. Hes also directing and producing HBOs new limited series The Sympathizer starring Robert Downey, Jr.

Park is one of the most visionary storytellers of our generation, and were excited to partner with him in bringing his cinematic masterpiece to the television screen, added Scott Herbst, EVP and Head of Scripted Development, Lionsgate Television. This series adaptation of Oldboy will feature the raw emotional power, iconic fight scenes and visceral style that made the film a classic.

Oldboy, which Park directed and co-wrote, follows a man who is kept in prison for 15 years without knowing why he was imprisoned or by whom and, upon his release, must find his captor in five days. The film is part of Parks Vengeance trilogy, which includes Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance.
