"Box" is a pun. A matchbox is an object, but the question presents the phrase "match box" as two words, where "box" is a verb, meaning to compete in boxing.

And then the punchline is treated the same way, where the tin can is an object, but the "tin can" refers to a tin being capable of competing at boxing.

I... don't think there's anything to "get" about why they chose the can, other than just that it works grammatically. Like, I dunno if tins have an additional association to boxing or matches.
