Difference in quality of effort you did put in. 30 minutes of actual studying is more important than 5 hours of studying with the TV on while texting every few minutes which is what the average high school student calls studying.

So I guess playing video games all day then looking at my friend's notes for 10 minutes on the bus ride to school on the morning of the test counts as "quality"? Because that was my main method of studying until late high school when I stopped taking the bus, so I had to study in class between naps.

You got rid of the second part of my post. I'm guessing because you know I'm right. If you payed attention to lectures and used the in-class free time teachers always gave you really would never have to do anything at home.

There are of course some kids who are just smarter than others but anytime a high school student says they studied hours and still failed the test it is due to the quality of their studying.

I literally studied for 0 minutes and didn't pay attention during class. Also, throw in the fact that I would help upperclassmen with homework in classes I wasn't even in. and I memorized the Periodic Table in like 5 minutes. Not everyone could do that.

Music is not an 'innate talent', it is actually something you have to simply practice for years. If there's one thing that needs to die it's the idea that there's some kind of magic involved in musical talent that ordinary folks can't tap into - the dexterity is learned and the understanding is learned. The drive is internal. Anyone can do it.

Music is an innate talent. I can read music and play piano, rudimentary guitar, and a bit of drums, but I have no ability to play by ear. I have practiced piano and guitar a ton, but no matter what I do I have had to either read a chart or specifically memorize a sequence in order to play anything. Some people have the ability to hear a song and replicate it on an instrument. That is a talent.

Because taking naps in class means you're "paying attention".

That seems a bit weird. Hearing a song and playing it comes natural to me, but it's a skill I only developed after basically learning to hear notes etc

Not to say that I can decipher more complex songs immediately, but basic chord structures and then playing around on the scales definitely makes me figure out pop songs and such in a whim.

What I mean to say it's definitely something you can teach yourself. But yeah it may come faster to me than it does for you, which I guess you could call 'talent' in that area of music

It's a little something called passion. Passion drives you to keep trying at something, even when it gets sour. This is all you know and all you'll ever know.

If some people are better at something than others, to me that means they aren't DOING IT HARD ENOUGH. Or there's an outside factor that's botching it up. In the words of Einstein, "Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life thinking it is stupid".

It's not worth comparing to "I do better on tests than some other kids and I don't study". That just means you had a better upbringing than them til that point, while they were out playing football or whatever, you were reading or learning.

I did pretty good in high school without ever studying or making an effort. I just have a memory that operates in such a way that I just managed to passively retain information because information was reiterated enough so that I just simply didn't forget much... and I was good at bulls***ting and finding shortcuts/taking liberties. I even got a B on a book report in college where I hadn't even read the book and couldn't find it anywhere in time, so I just based the entire report on what I read on the back cover of the book from a picture on the internet, and took information from write-ups that other people posted of the book. Come to think of it, I probably would've ended up graduating college if I had just gone to class all the time instead of almost never...

It's BS that you guys say you both never paid attention/slept in class and then also never studied. You can't understand things you have never seen. That also implies you never did homework and even if you somehow 100%'d all your tests you still wouldn't pass cause generally in high school classes tests make up like 1/4 of your grade. You guys are doing some heavy exaggeration somewhere.

Also lol at memorizing the periodic table in 5 minutes. You would have to be a genius and someone that smart would never get involved in an argument like this and probably wouldn't be on this site at all. Memorizing the periodic table in 5 minutes is more ridiculous than any TV/movie memory feat I've ever seen. Sorry but you aren't smarter than fictional detectives whose abilities are heavily dramatized.

well I for one never said I didn't pay attention in class. I listened to what was being said and I took notes but never really studied the notes I took. I just retained most of the information. I did homework, just with lots of bulls***ting and shortcut-taking, as well as taking advantage of circumstances when I could, like when teachers said s*** couldn't be turned in late, so I never did the assignment and then near the end of the term, the teacher would say "you never did this assignment" and I would say "yeah because of the no turning in stuff late policy. <excuse>, so since I couldn't turn it in late, I didn't do/finish it" and they would say "do it anyway now and I'll give partial credit" so I'd do it and get full credit. I got mostly in the 80s on tests, sometimes in the 90s, once in a while in the 70s. In 7th grade I had a social studies test I didn't study for because the teacher was a dick and I didn't care about his class as much as other classes. Ended getting a 94 and thinking "wow nice I did that well just by remembering stuff and I didn't need to study. I'm going to keep doing this to see if it was a fluke" so that's what I did it worked for me. The fact that I remember the exact grade (and even stranger that I remember the paper that the test was printed on was blue) goes to show that my memory just locks onto things sometimes and never lets go. I'm not one of those people with a photographic memory that remembers everything though... just seemingly random details that jump out at me for whatever reason.

Whatever! Your parents then, who ignited your interest in knowledge. The events that surrounded your life which lead to your better understanding of that subject. Parents are pretty much what defines your standard of life, naturally they play a huge role in what you learn and how much better you are as a human being.

Even discarting those factors, high school standards are so low. From my experience all I had to do was be coherent at writing sentences and putting the key terms in there. Like I said, it's not really comparable.

Talent isn't a thing. Sorry, but it isn't. I don't believe in it.

I don't see anything wrong with the picture. I mean you can call him an ******* for getting angry at people who are just trying to compliment him (in their own flawed way), but he's not wrong. With all the talent in the world he would still be a complete nobody without the hard work and dedication. There is no need to "give thanks" for his ability as some gift of god just as there is no need to be angry at god for not giving us the athleticism to be NBA athletes.

It just seems like a ridiculous idea to thank God for giving people talent as if it was a personal gift if we're not also going to blame God for all of our shortcomings as well. People are born and are often suited to different things. When someone is suited for a specific task and they also put in the tremendous amount of work to perfect their craft, great things can happen. If God is responsible for everything, I don't see the point in acknowledging it, since the only variable in the equation is free will and the person's choice to put in the work and become great at something.

They're complimenting me for being good at something and I'm not stuck up enough to complain about it.

I've gotten B's on tests where I literally knew nothing about the material, and I've never once failed one. They're all about educated guessing, which is easy even without knowledge of the material.

And honestly, if you pass your tests, attend most days and do the major projects, you'll never fail a course. I rarely ever did standard homework.

But that's the thing, people typically aren't trying to undermine you. It's just basic fact. The fact that you were born, as opposed to being a miscarriage required some amount of luck.

The fact that your family has enough money to take care of you so you can type on this computer today was lucky for you.

Just because luck was involved, doesn't mean it isn't important. I don't think anyone is saying "Your accomplishments don't count because you just got lucky".

And your telling me that I couldn't take any of my friends pics off facebook, put any quote on it and upload it on reddit? Come on guys, I'm not saying it's unlikely that it's him, I'm just saying it's not a certainty.

Yeah, I understand the concept of a troll and I realize that they exist, especially on a place like reddit.

You should go check out the reddit atheism board for yourself. Come back and tell me that they are all trolling.

It is really a shame when people try to undermine your efforts by effectively saying you were lucky to be where you are.

Luck, at least a little bit, goes into all talent.

Athletes are a good example, actually. Tons of kids work their asses off to be good as basketball, but there was only one Jordan. Only one LeBron James.

I was praying for a post like this. Ask and ye shall receive.
