3 and 4 are still great games on its own and have aged very well.

persona 1 and 2 have aged a bit but are still playable. However the best ones to start are 5,4 and 3

I tried to start Persona with 1 on PSP and didn't like it much. Played 3 portable and then stopped. Played all of P4G tben went and finished 3.

I really enjoyed 3 and 4. And I'm loving 5.

Persona 4 holds up fine, even the PS2 original. Iwas just playing it recently.

It's tough to go back to 3 after 4 because they changed the battle system so much. You get to control all party members in battle in 4, and you can only control the MC in 3.

In portable you can control all party members.
Worth the sacrifice of overworld cutscenes and movement for it.

I have FES as a ps2 classic on ps3 and couldn't do it.

Wut. The other 3 members are dumbasses who never use the right moves. I'm begging for healing and they completely ignore me. All it takes is one camera switch in P4 and I have Yukiko healing whoever I want.

it wouldnt have been so bad if thr AI wasnt complete ass, interesting idea bad execution, that said P3P didnt exactly fix the problem since the game wasnt rebalanced with full team control in mind

also side note, did amyome actually use ken or akamaru? cant imagine relying on boh the ai and insta kill getting anywhere, plus useless on bosses, something handled way better in 4

I'm enjoying P5 too, but the game feels even more linear/railroaded than previous games.

It added a lot to the game. These games are fundamentally about your own personhood and the individuality of the people around you. Keeping everything but the main character from being a direct game piece of the player is thematically important to the point of trumping the incredibly overblown gameplay concerns. And given that P4 doubles down on these themes, it actually needed to double down on its own metaphors, not go back on them.

And let's address those demonstrably false, and inherently contradictory gameplay claims.

The overwhelming reason your party members won't do what you want is because you have failed to do any sort of basic party management even once, and yet I am expected to believe that people who won't do it once have a deep need to do it consistently on an ongoing basis. I have only one answer to that,

AI party control is almost all gain. It's faster/more UI efficient by not bogging the player down in constant menus, and more immersive/thematically relevant.

How's the music? I liked the BGM in Persona 3 and 4. That's mainly how I got interested in the series.

One of my favorite series. Perhaps not a surprise, considering that I love JRPGs as a genre. But I started back at the original Revelations: Persona for PS1, and I have to say ... play the PSP remake. For a variety of reasons. I find P1 (PS1) almost unplayable today. But do go back and play Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, especially if you can play the PSP remake of Persona 2: Innocent Sin first. The pre-P3 series is still good, IMO, but it feels more like old school Shin Megami Tensei. Not for everybody.

I think I like the rural-ish setting and murder mystery theme in persona 4 a lot better than 5, but other than that I like everything better in 5

Maybes it's because I've played too many of these games now, but I also found 4 less predictable than 5

I mean, I knew 5s only big spoilers INSTANTLY as soon as the first kind of hint was given at all and then I waited months and months in game for a reveal I already knew was coming

Music is for sure better in 5 though, I'd say that the lyrical boss theme that you first hear at the third to last dungeon is worth the entire playthrough up to that point. That song gets me pumped as all heck.

the only counter argument needed, and it's the one that beats the shit out of everything you can come up with, is that AI controlled party members is ridicilously stupid. you tried claiming it offered more control, which is pure nonsense. it's taking control away. you should never have to wonder, "gee, i wonder if my AI controlled teammate is going to heal itself this turn, or use a move that the enemy isn't effected by."

and more often than not, the result is that it used a move that doesn't work.
