Even just having it win this match already means your bracket is shot. You'll never make that point up.

I just voted 1987 because that is the Xmas I got my NES. I would have figured 1985 would have won its first match too, but I guess I didn't realize that it was paired up with 1987 (I didn't submit, nor look at the bracket before this contest started).

No, I picked against 1987, this is a Best Year contest, not best game.

GameFaqs screwed you over. They don't reference that the NES Famicon was released in 1985, even tho it clearly lists it in the "question mark" section when making your picks.

I too have it going very far. But the image makes it look like Excite Bike vs Metroid, Dukhunt vs Megaman, Space Harrier vs Castlevania, and Mario vs Zelda.

Everything is a best game contest. Including best game and best character. I'll be here when a year with a Zelda game most likely ocarina wins it all. Keep this bumped.

1985: Super Mario Bros

1987: The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, Castlevania

NES launched in a few markets with a limited software selection vs the first really GREAT year of the NES

I'm amazed that anyone would have 1985 winning the whole thing. Probably 80% of the people voting weren't even born yet, so none of them experienced SMB revitalizing the industry and therefore 1985 is of little to no meaning to them. And I'm one of these people. I knew right away that the winner of this contest wasn't going to be an NES or SNES era year for that very reason.

As much as this board cherishes the PSX era years, there are many people voting who were babbies at that time and didn't get their start until the PS2 or, hell, even later. I have 2016 winning the whole thing because of recency bias.

I don't remember what I picked, but I have learned that the young'uns aren't going to vote for older years over more recent ones. It's impossible for them to remember just how amazing these old games really were in their time.

Yeah, this. Even if you are one of the people who is banking on the significance of the NES (and arguably SMB), you have to consider what it's up against. 1985 never had a chance against "1985 but better".

I third this post. Of course 1987 was better vs. '85, since NES(and I think also Sega Master System, correct me if wrong) was only being launched in '85. And IIRC, the original Ninja Gaiden on NES came out that year. Another reason for me to vote '87! I'm not surprised this year is winning over '85, in the poll.

I didn't do a bracket, but my guess is that a year in the 90s or 2000s will win. If I had to bet more specifically, my gut feeling is that an early 2000s year(when PS2 was big) will ultimately win this. I also don't think it'd be impossible, if a mid or late 90s year won this contest.

Like I said in another thread, I get that this contest is mostly about games, but 85 should really win this one. It was the release of the NES and the rebirth of console gaming.

'87 is what really got the NES going though, 85's status as a gaming rebirth is a little overrated

So SMB and the NES didn't sell as much until 87? A friend of mine got it around 89-90, but I was that was probably my first exposure to it.

The NES sold well early on to my knowledge but I definitely think that 1987 is when the NES started to actually cement its legacy so to speak.

Zelda was released in '86 though. Adventure of Link came out in '97. Did they REALLY show the original Zelda as one of the games that came out in 87?

Is this contest showing Japanese release dates, US release dates or mixed? Cause this is a huge issue, and I filled out my bracket based on first releases strictly.

NES wasn't even available in most of the country until 86 so 85 definitely doesn't deserve the credit
